Nano-Fat Grafting: What Patients Should Know

Introduction

Facial rejuvenation today goes beyond simply lifting or filling — it increasingly focuses on restoring skin quality and vitality. One of the most innovative techniques in this area is nano-fat grafting.

Unlike traditional fat grafting, which adds volume, nano-fat grafting uses a specially processed form of fat rich in regenerative cells. This helps improve skin texture, fine lines, pigmentation, and overall quality, making it an emerging technique for patients seeking natural facial rejuvenation.

What Is Nano-Fat Grafting

Nano-fat grafting is a procedure where:

  1. Fat is harvested from the patient’s own body (usually abdomen, flanks, or thighs) as small-volume liposuction. This can be performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or as part of a combined GA procedure.
  2. The fat is then processed and filtered into a very fine emulsion via a sharp blade system (Adinizer) — removing larger fat lobules but preserving viable nano-fat, which contains cellular components promoting growth.
  3. The nano-fat is then injected into the skin layers of the face to stimulate regeneration and improve skin quality.

Unlike standard fat grafting, nano-fat does not add significant bulk or volume, but instead improves skin tone, texture, and health.

Benefits of Nano-Fat Grafting

  • Skin Rejuvenation: Improves fine wrinkles, sun damage, and pigmentation.
  • Collagen Stimulation: Encourages natural collagen and elastin production.
  • Natural Approach: Uses the patient’s own tissue — no synthetic products.
  • Scar and Pigmentation Improvement: Can soften acne scars or post-surgical scars, and improve irregular pigmentation.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Regenerative effects can continue to improve skin quality for months after treatment.

Common Treatment Areas

Nano-fat grafting can be applied to:

  • Face and under-eyes (to reduce dark circles and fine lines)
  • Cheeks and jawline (for skin quality)
  • Around the mouth (for fine lines and lip rejuvenation)
  • Scars or skin irregularities (to improve texture and pigmentation)

The Procedure

The procedure can be combined with surgical procedures like facelift or blepharoplasty for comprehensive rejuvenation.

  • Downtime: Mild swelling, bruising, or redness for a few days.
  • Healing: Skin quality gradually improves over weeks to months.
  • Results: Long-lasting, with continued improvement in skin smoothness, elasticity, and tone.

Risks and Safety Considerations

Because nano-fat grafting uses your own tissue, the risk of allergy to foreign materials is very low, though all procedures carry risks.

As with any procedure, risks include:

  • Bruising, swelling, or temporary redness, or discomfort
  • Rare risk of infection
  • Subtle differences in response between patients (some notice more dramatic outcome than others)
  • Need for further procedures
  • Donor site (fat-harvesting source) issues e.g. contour irregularity, oil cysts/fat necrosis, pigmentation change, asymmetry, etc.

Most patients resume routine activities within a few days; visible improvements typically develop over weeks to months as the skin’s cellular components integrate.

Is Nano-Fat Grafting Right for You?

Nano-Fat grafting is ideal for patients who:

  • Want to improve skin quality rather than add significant volume
  • Have early signs of ageing such as fine lines, dullness, or pigmentation
  • Prefer a natural, regenerative treatment using their own tissue
  • May wish to combine it with other surgical or non-surgical rejuvenation options

This treatment is intended only for patients aged 18 and over. A seven-day cooling-off period applies for those under 18, in accordance with AHPRA guidelines.
