Introduction
Full, balanced lips are often seen as a sign of youth and vitality. As we age, the space between the upper lip and the base of the nose can lengthen, making the upper lip appear thinner and less defined. A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens this distance, creating a more youthful, lifted appearance and improving the balance between the lips and surrounding facial features.
This guide explains how a lip lift works, who is a good candidate, what recovery involves, and the results you can expect.
What Is a Lip Lift?
A lip lift is a minor facial aesthetic surgery that:
- Shortens the upper lip skin between the nose and lip border (philtrum)
- Elevates the position of the upper lip to reveal more of the upper teeth when smiling
- Improves lip shape, contour, and balance
It does not add volume like dermal fillers — instead, it enhances lip proportion and can make the lips appear fuller and more youthful without injections.
Types of Lip Lift Techniques
- Sub-nasal “Bullhorn” Lip Lift (Most Common)
- Incision hidden along the natural curve under the nose
- Removes a small strip of skin to lift the central upper lip
- Corner Lip Lift
- Targets downturned mouth corners for a more pleasant resting expression
- Often performed with other lip or facial rejuvenation procedures
- Direct Lip Lift
- Incision placed along the upper lip vermilion border
- Used less frequently due to more visible scarring, usually for reconstructive needs
- “Internal” Lip Lift
- Incision placed inside the mouth on the mucosa (hence some advertised this as a “scarless” lip lift)
- Utilises a V-Y plasty or mucosal advancement to push the inner lip tissue outward, increasing the visible vermilion
- Does not shorten the philtral distance (distance between nose and lip)
- May not achieve the same lifting effect as a traditional lip lift
- May cause more swelling initially
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Lip Lift?
You may be suitable if you:
- Feel your upper lip is too long or covers your upper teeth when smiling
- Have age-related lip elongation or thinning
- Want more visible upper teeth when smiling
- Prefer a permanent alternative to lip fillers
- Are in good overall health and a non-smoker
✅ Lip lifts can be performed alone or as part of the facial aesthetic surgery plan with procedures such as facelift, eyelid surgery, or dermal fillers.
Benefits of a Lip Lift
- Creates a more youthful smile
- Enhances lip definition without filler
- Increases upper tooth show for a natural, refreshed look
- Permanent improvement without ongoing maintenance treatments
How to Prepare for Surgery
- Choose a Qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon
Look for FRACS (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery) qualification, and experience in facial aesthetic surgery. - Medical & Lifestyle Preparation
- Stop smoking and avoid certain medications as advised
- Plan for a few days of reduced activity post-surgery
- Set Realistic Expectations
Your surgeon will assess your facial proportions to determine how much lift is appropriate for natural results.
What to Expect During Recovery
- Mild swelling and bruising for the first week
- Stitches removed around day 5–7
- Scar is initially pink, fading over several months; placement under the nose helps conceal it
- Most patients return to social activities within 7–10 days
Risks and Safety Considerations
While safe in experienced hands, risks include:
- Noticeable scarring if not properly concealed or cared for
- Asymmetry
- Over-correction or under-correction
- Changes in sensation (usually temporary)
Careful planning, precise technique, and good aftercare minimise these risks.
How Long Do Results Last?
A lip lift is permanent, though lips will continue to age naturally over time. Many patients enjoy long-lasting enhancement without the need for ongoing treatments like fillers.
Is a Lip Lift Right for You?
A lip lift can restore youthful proportions, enhance your smile, and create balance between your lips and facial features — all without the “overfilled” look sometimes associated with injectables.
