Introduction
A well-defined jawline and smooth neck are key features of a youthful appearance. However, ageing, weight changes, genetics, and sun exposure can lead to sagging skin, muscle banding, and excess fat in the neck.
A neck lift (also called lower rhytidectomy or neck contouring surgery) is a surgical procedure that restores a firmer, smoother, and more youthful neck profile. It can be performed alone or combined with other facial rejuvenation surgeries, such as a facelift.
What a Neck Lift Can Address
A neck lift can improve:
- Loose or sagging neck skin (“turkey neck”)
- Prominent vertical muscle bands (platysmal banding)
- Excess fat deposits under the chin (double chin)
- Poorly defined jawline
- Wrinkling and crepey skin texture
Who Is a Good Surgical Candidate for Neck Lift Surgery?
You may be suitable if you:
- Have visible neck sagging or excess skin
- Are in good general health and a non-smoker
- Have realistic expectations of surgery outcomes
- Want a long-lasting improvement to your neck and jawline profile
A consultation with a Specialist Plastic Surgeon will determine whether surgery or non-surgical alternatives will best achieve your goals.
Neck Lift Surgical Techniques
Depending on your needs, a neck lift may involve:
- Traditional Neck Lift (often performed in conjunction with Facelift)
- Incisions are made around the ear and possibly under the chin
- Skin is lifted, underlying muscles tightened, and excess fat removed
- Bulky salivary (submandibular) glands can be shaved to create sharp jawline
- Excess skin is trimmed for a smoother contour
- Limited Incision Neck Lift
- Smaller incisions (under chin and behind ears) for patients with less skin laxity, but want to improve contour and appearance of the neck without addressing the lower face
- Faster recovery but more limited results
- Neck Liposuction (if excess fat is the main concern)
- Performed through tiny incisions
- This does not address the loose skin or the platysmal muscle bands
Recovery After Neck Lift Surgery
- Initial swelling and bruising: Common in the first 2 weeks
- The surgeon may choose to leave 1 or 2 drains within the neck to minimise fluid collection
- Some will place a series of ‘spider-web’ looking net sutures for the first 2-3 days, instead of the drains
- Support garment: Worn to reduce swelling and support healing
- Return to work: Usually within 3-4 weeks, depending on recovery speed
- It is not uncommon to feel significant tightness around the neck after neck lift surgery for up to 6 weeks or more
- Final results: Generally visible after 3 months as swelling fully resolves
How Long Will Results Last?
While ageing continues naturally, neck lift results often last 10 years with good skin care, sun protection, and a healthy lifestyle.
Risks and Safety Considerations
Potential risks include:
- Bruising or swelling
- Temporary numbness or tightness
- Skin necrosis (usually only in smokers)
- Scarring (usually well-hidden in natural creases)
- Rare complications such as infection or nerve injury or salivary gland leak
Choosing an experienced FRACS-qualified Plastic Surgeon helps minimise risks and ensures the safest surgical approach.
