Introduction
Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Over time, changes in the body, implant condition, or individual preferences may lead to the need for implant removal and replacement, or revision surgery.
Whether due to complications, ageing, or personal choice, breast implant revision surgery is designed to help patients maintain both aesthetic outcomes and breast health.
Why Patients Consider Breast Implant Revision
Common reasons include:
- Capsular contracture (hardening of the scar tissue around the implant)
- Implant rupture or leakage
- Shifting or malposition of the implant
- Desire to change size, shape, or type of implant
- Cosmetic changes over time (breast droop, weight fluctuations, ageing)
- Medical concerns or lifestyle changes (e.g., decision to go implant-free)
Options for Breast Implant Revision
- Breast Implant Removal & Replacement
- Old implants are removed and replaced with new ones
- Patients may choose a different size, shape, or implant material
- Can correct implant-related problems and refresh appearance
- If the surrounding scar tissue is unfavourable, then capsulectomy (removal of implant-related scar tissue) will be performed
- If there is significant ageing-relate breast changes, a concurrent breast lift (mastopexy) can be performed to improve aesthetic breast shape
- Breast Implant Removal (Explantation)
- Implants are removed completely without being replaced
- Usually combined with capsulectomy
- May be paired with a breast lift (mastopexy) for improved shape after implant removal
- Breast Implant Removal with Fat Grafting
- Fat is taken from another area of the body (liposuction) and injected into the breasts
- Provides natural volume without new implants
- Often used when patients want smaller but still fuller breasts after explant
The Surgical Process
- Anaesthesia: Performed under general anaesthetic
- Incisions: Usually follow original scars when possible, though might be a bit longer; if concurrent lift is being planned, there will be additional scars
- Duration: Typically 1–3 hours, depending on complexity
- Hospital stay: Often day surgery, occasionally overnight
Recovery After Implant Revision Surgery
- Dressings: Usually until the wound is healed in the first 2 weeks
- Support bra: Required for first 6 weeks to allow new implants to stabilise
- Swelling and bruising: Common for 1–2 weeks
- Return to light activities: Usually after 1–2 weeks
- Full recovery: 6-12 weeks, depending on the procedure
- Results: Long-lasting, though natural ageing continues
Risks and Considerations
Possible risks include:
- Infection or bleeding
- Poor scarring
- Asymmetry or contour irregularities
- Changes in breast sensation
- Recurrence of capsular contracture (if implant replaced)
