Introduction
Despite a healthy diet and regular exercise, some areas of the body can retain stubborn fat deposits that are difficult to shift. Liposuction is a surgical fat reduction procedure that targets these problem areas, improving body contour and balance.
If you are considering liposuction, it is important to understand what the procedure involves, who is a good candidate, and how recovery works, so you can make an informed decision.
What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction removes excess fat deposits through small incisions using a specialised cannula connected to a suction device. It is not a weight-loss surgery, but rather a body contouring procedure that can be performed on various areas, including:
- Abdomen and waist
- Thighs and hips
- Upper arms
- Back or flanks (“love handles”)
- Neck and under the chin
✅ Liposuction can be performed alone or combined with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast reduction for enhanced results.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
You may be suitable for liposuction if you:
- Are close to your ideal weight but have localised fat deposits
- Have good skin elasticity (skin will contract better after fat removal)
- Are in good overall health and a non-smoker (or able to stop smoking before surgery)
- Have realistic expectations about the outcome
⚠️ Not suitable: Liposuction is not an alternative to diet and exercise and will not address the loose skin excess or cellulite.
Different Liposuction Techniques
- Traditional (Suction-Assisted) Liposuction
The most common method, where fat is loosened and removed with controlled suction. - Power-Assisted Liposuction
Uses a vibrating cannula for more efficient fat removal, particularly in fibrous or larger treatment areas. - Vaser or Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction
Uses ultrasound energy to help break down fat before removal; useful in certain cases but not necessary for every patient.
Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate technique based on your body type and goals.
How to Prepare for Surgery
- Choose a Qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon
Ensure your surgeon holds FRACS (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery) certification and is experienced in body contouring. - Plan Your Recovery
Arrange time off work (usually 1–2 weeks) and avoid strenuous activities for 4–6 weeks. - Lifestyle Optimisation
Maintain a stable weight, avoid smoking, and follow all pre-operative instructions for the best outcome.
What to Expect During Recovery
- Bruising and Swelling: Common and can take several weeks to fully settle.
- Compression Garments: Worn for 4–6 weeks to support healing and reduce swelling.
- Return to Work: Most patients return to office-based work within 5–7 days, depending on the extent of surgery.
- Final Results: Visible improvement is seen in a few weeks, but the final contour may take 3–6 months to fully refine.
Risks and Safety Considerations
Liposuction is safe when performed by a specialist, but risks include:
- Contour irregularities (lumps or unevenness)
- Temporary numbness or fluid accumulation
- Rare complications such as bleeding or infection
A qualified surgeon will use precise techniques and provide comprehensive aftercare to minimise these risks.
How Long Do Results Last?
The fat cells removed during liposuction are permanently eliminated, but the remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain. Maintaining a stable weight is key to preserving your results.
Is Liposuction Right for You?
Liposuction can help sculpt the body and enhance natural proportions when performed on the right candidate. It is best suited for patients who are already healthy and close to their goal weight but need targeted fat reduction in specific areas.
Always choose a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon who can create a safe, personalised plan for your needs.
