Thigh Lift: What Patients Need to Know About Thigh Reduction Surgery

Introduction

Loose or sagging skin on the inner or outer thighs is a common concern for patients who have experienced significant weight loss, age-related skin laxity, or genetic skin redundancy.

A thigh lift, or thigh reduction surgery, is a body contouring procedure that reshapes the thighs by removing excess skin and fat — creating a firmer, more sculpted silhouette and improving comfort during movement.

This blog explains who is a good candidate, how the procedure works, and what to expect during recovery.

What Is a Thigh Lift?

A thigh lift is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the thighs to improve leg contour, tone, and skin tightness.

Thigh lifts may be performed alone or in combination with other post-weight loss surgeries (e.g., abdominoplasty or brachioplasty, etc).

Who Is a Good Candidate for Thigh Reduction Surgery?

You may be suitable for a thigh lift if you:

  • Have loose or sagging skin on your inner or outer thighs
  • Are at or near your goal weight, but have skin excess that cannot be treated with diet or exercise
  • Are in good general health and a non-smoker
  • Have realistic expectations about scars, downtime, and results

✅ This procedure is particularly common among post-bariatric massive weight loss patients who want to complete their transformation.

Common Thigh Lift Techniques

Your surgeon will choose the best technique based on your skin quality, anatomy, and goals:

  1. Mini Thigh Lift
    • Shorter scar in the groin crease only
    • Best for selected patients with mild laxity high on the inner thigh
  2. Inner Thigh Lift
    • Incision placed in the groin crease, extending down the inner thigh
    • Suitable for moderate to severe inner thigh laxity
    • Can be combined with liposuction with contouring
  3. Extended Thigh Lift
    • Incision runs vertically from groin to knee
    • Almost always combined with liposuction to area of skin removal
    • Suitable for extensive inner thigh excess, particularly after massive weight loss

How to Prepare for Surgery

  1. Choose a Specialist Plastic Surgeon
Ensure your surgeon holds FRACS (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery) and has experience in post-weight loss body contouring surgery.
  2. Plan Ahead
    • Maintain a stable weight
    • Stop smoking and certain medications prior to surgery
    • Arrange 2–3 weeks off work, help at home, and compression garments
  3. Set Realistic Expectations
You will have visible scars, but they are typically well-concealed and fade over time. Your surgeon will provide scar care recommendations.

What to Expect During Recovery

  • Compression Garments: Worn for 4–6 weeks to reduce swelling and support tissue healing
  • Swelling & Bruising: Common during the first few weeks
  • Mobility: You’ll be encouraged to walk gently soon after surgery, but avoid squatting, lunging, or strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks
  • Return to Work: Office work is usually possible by 2–3 weeks, depending on comfort and activity level

✅ Full contour results become visible by 3–6 months, with scars continuing to fade for up to 12-18 months.

Risks and Safety Considerations

While safe in experienced hands, “thigh-plasty” carries risks such as:

  • Delayed wound healing (especially in high-friction areas)
  • Seroma (fluid build-up, requiring needle aspiration)
  • Unfavourable hypertrophic scarring (can be managed with silicone, massage, micro-needling, steroid injection and laser, etc)
  • Numbness or changes in skin sensation (temporary or permanent)
  • Asymmetry or minor contour irregularities
  • Need for possible revision surgery

A carefully performed surgical plan and good post-op compliance reduce these risks significantly.

Is a Thigh Lift Right for You?

Thigh reduction surgery can dramatically improve physical comfort, confidence in clothing, and body proportions — especially after major weight loss or lifestyle changes. It’s a powerful step in many body contouring journeys.

Speak with a Specialist Plastic Surgeon to learn if you’re a candidate and what results are achievable in your case.
