Nipple Surgery: What Patients Need to Know About Nipple Reduction and Inverted Nipple Correction

Introduction

The nipples play a central role in both the appearance and function of the breasts. For some patients, concerns about nipple size, shape, or position can affect confidence or cause physical discomfort.

Nipple surgery includes procedures such as nipple reduction and inverted nipple correction, both of which are safe and effective options for improving breast aesthetics.

Why Patients Consider Nipple Surgery

  • Nipple Reduction: For nipples that are enlarged, long, or prominent and visible through clothing.
  • Inverted Nipple Correction: For nipples that turn inward instead of projecting outward, which may cause cosmetic concern or, in some cases, difficulties with breastfeeding.
  • Balance and Symmetry: To achieve proportion with the breast and areola.
  • Confidence: To improve self-esteem and comfort in both clothing and intimate settings.

Nipple Reduction Surgery

What It Involves

  • Performed under local anaesthetic (with sedation if needed).
  • A small portion of nipple tissue is removed to achieve the desired size.
  • The nipple base and sensation are preserved, so function is usually unaffected.

Recovery

  • Minimal downtime; most patients return to daily activities within 1–2 days.
  • Mild swelling and tenderness for a few days.
  • Stitches are usually dissolvable; scars fade and are well concealed.

Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery

What It Involves

  • Inverted nipples are usually caused by shortened ducts or tight fibrous tissue pulling the nipple inward.
  • Surgery involves releasing or adjusting the tethered tissue to allow the nipple to project outward.
    • Milk duct preservation technique (high risk of recurrence) vs
    • Milk duct division technique (more commonly performed)
  • Can be performed under local anaesthetic depending on individual patient comfort level & tolerance.

Recovery

  • Quick recovery with minimal downtime.
  • A protective dressing may be placed to maintain projection during healing.
  • Some patients may experience temporary changes in nipple sensation.

Risks and Safety Considerations

Both procedures are generally safe, but possible risks include:

  • Infection or bleeding (rare)
  • Temporary or permanent changes in nipple sensation
  • Visible scarring (usually minimal and well-hidden)
  • For inverted nipple correction: impact on future breastfeeding
  • Recurrence / Asymmetry / Dissatisfaction of the Result
